Before we dive into altering, let’s quickly understand what a Stock Category is:
A Stock Category allows you to classify similar items that belong to different stock groups but serve the same purpose. It helps in parallel classification of stock items for better analysis and reporting.
Gateway of Tally > Alter (Press ‘A’)
Click on Stock Category (Press ‘C’)
Select the Stock Category to Alter
A list of all stock categories will be displayed. Use the arrow keys or type the name to select the category you want to edit.
Make the Required Changes
Now you can make any of the following edits:
- 🔤 Name: Change the name of the stock category.
- 📄 Under: Select a different parent category (if applicable).
⚠️ Note: If the category is already linked to stock items, renaming it will update the name everywhere it’s used.

Press Ctrl + A or select Yes when prompted to accept and save the changes.
